Overview

A set of abstract interfaces that define the API contract for HTTP server implementations and request handling, enabling portable application code that is decoupled from any specific HTTP library.

Description

The HTTP Server Interface principle establishes a layered abstraction for HTTP serving. At the top level, HTTPServerInterface defines server lifecycle operations (start, terminate, wait for termination) and handler registration (exact URI matching and custom dispatching). ServerRequestInterface defines the per-request API: reading request bodies, writing response bodies, accessing and setting headers, and completing or aborting responses. EventExecutor abstracts the I/O event processing thread pool. ServerOptions and RequestHandlerOptions provide configuration without coupling to implementation details. This layered design means application code (request handlers) only depends on ServerRequestInterface, server setup code depends on HTTPServerInterface, and neither depends on the underlying libevent implementation. The factory function (CreateEvHTTPServer) is the single point where the concrete implementation is selected. Helper functions (SetContentType, SetContentTypeHTML, SetContentTypeTEXT) provide convenience without polluting the interface.

Usage

Use these interfaces when writing HTTP request handlers or server setup code that should be portable across different HTTP server implementations. Application handlers should accept ServerRequestInterface and use only its methods.

Theoretical Basis

This design applies the Dependency Inversion Principle (DIP): high-level modules (application handlers) depend on abstractions (interfaces), not on low-level modules (libevent wrappers). The Abstract Factory pattern is used for server creation (CreateEvHTTPServer). The separation between server interface and request interface follows the Interface Segregation Principle (ISP): clients that only handle requests do not need to know about server lifecycle. The request/response model follows the Request-Reply messaging pattern, with the addition of streaming capabilities (PartialReply) for progressive response delivery.
