Overview

A model persistence strategy that periodically saves and restores neural network weights during training using PyTorch's serialization utilities.

Description

Checkpoint management ensures that training progress is preserved by periodically serializing the model's state_dict (a dictionary mapping parameter names to tensors) to disk. In BackgroundMattingV2, checkpoints are saved at configurable step intervals and at epoch boundaries. The system also supports resuming training from a previous checkpoint via load_state_dict.

Checkpoints are saved in two forms:

  • Interval checkpoints: epoch-{N}-iter-{step}.pth saved every checkpoint-interval steps
  • Epoch checkpoints: epoch-{N}.pth saved at the end of each epoch

Validation is performed at configurable intervals, computing loss on a held-out subset and logging to TensorBoard.

Usage

Use this principle during model training to protect against data loss from interruptions, and during inference/export to load trained model weights. The checkpoint interval should be tuned based on training duration and storage constraints.

Theoretical Basis

Checkpoint management is an engineering practice rather than a machine learning algorithm. The core operations are:

Serialization:

# Abstract checkpoint save
torch.save(model.state_dict(), path)

Deserialization:

# Abstract checkpoint load
model.load_state_dict(torch.load(path, map_location=device))

Validation logging:

# Abstract validation step
with torch.no_grad():
    loss = compute_loss(model, validation_data)
    writer.add_scalar('valid_loss', loss, step)
