Overview

A parameter set that controls the sampling strategy and output format of language model text generation.

Description

Generation Configuration encapsulates the hyperparameters that influence how a language model selects tokens during text generation. Key parameters include temperature (controlling randomness), top-p (nucleus sampling threshold), top-k (limiting candidate tokens), candidate count (number of alternative completions), and system instruction (behavioral steering). These parameters allow fine-grained control over the tradeoff between creativity and determinism in model outputs, and can also constrain the output format (e.g., JSON mode, specific MIME types).

Usage

Use generation configuration when you need to control model behavior beyond the default settings. Lower temperature values produce more deterministic outputs suitable for factual Q&A, while higher values encourage creative or diverse responses. System instructions provide persistent behavioral guidelines that apply across all turns. Response MIME type constraints enable structured output (JSON) for programmatic consumption.

Theoretical Basis

Token selection in autoregressive language models follows a probability distribution over the vocabulary at each step:

P(xt|x<t)=softmax(zt/T)

Where T is the temperature parameter:

  • T = 0: Greedy decoding (most probable token)
  • T = 1: Standard sampling from the learned distribution
  • T > 1: Flattened distribution (more random)

Top-p (Nucleus) Sampling selects from the smallest set of tokens whose cumulative probability exceeds p:

xVpP(x|x<t)p

Top-k Sampling restricts selection to the k most probable tokens before applying temperature.
