Overview
Description: Scene construction and interactive visualization system for rendering MuJoCo simulations with support for camera control, object selection, and visual annotations.
Context: MuJoCo provides a built-in visualization system that constructs renderable scenes from simulation state, handles user interaction for camera manipulation and object perturbation, and supports various visual aids such as contact force arrows, constraint visualization, and transparency.
Theoretical Basis
The visualization system follows a model-view-controller pattern. Scene construction traverses the simulation state to create a list of renderable geometric primitives (geoms, sites, tendons, lights, cameras) with associated materials and transforms. The interaction module processes mouse and keyboard input to control camera orbit, pan, zoom, and object selection/perturbation. Visualization options allow toggling the display of various annotations including center of mass markers, contact points and forces, joint axes, and inertia ellipsoids. The scene representation is decoupled from the rendering backend, enabling both OpenGL and offscreen rendering.
